The Loudness War Cheat Sheet
Quick-reference data: how dynamic range collapsed, which albums are worst (and best), and what the streaming era means for mastering.
Dynamic Range by Decade
How average dynamic range (DR score) has declined since the 1960s. Higher DR = more contrast between loud and quiet = more natural sound. Data from the DR Database (dr.loudness-war.info).
| Era | Years | Typical DR | LUFS Range | Primary Format | Key Factor |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1960s | 1960–1969 | 12–16 | −18 to −14 | Mono/Stereo Vinyl | Tube/analog warmth, limited processing |
| 1970s | 1970–1979 | 11–15 | −18 to −14 | Stereo Vinyl | Analog consoles, tape compression |
| Early '80s | 1980–1985 | 10–14 | −16 to −12 | Vinyl / Early CD | Digital recording begins, still analog mastering |
| Late '80s | 1986–1989 | 9–13 | −14 to −11 | CD | Digital peak limiting introduced |
| Early '90s | 1990–1995 | 8–12 | −13 to −10 | CD | Competitive loudness begins, Oasis vs. everyone |
| Late '90s | 1996–1999 | 7–11 | −12 to −9 | CD | Brickwall limiters become standard |
| Early 2000s | 2000–2005 | 5–9 | −11 to −7 | CD | Loudness war peaks; Metallica's Death Magnetic |
| Late 2000s | 2006–2009 | 4–8 | −10 to −6 | CD / MP3 | Worst era on record; DR4 albums common |
| Early 2010s | 2010–2014 | 6–10 | −11 to −8 | Digital / CD | Streaming normalization awareness grows |
| Late 2010s | 2015–2019 | 7–11 | −12 to −9 | Streaming | Spotify/Apple normalization; slight DR recovery |
| 2020s | 2020–2025 | 7–12 | −14 to −9 | Streaming / Atmos | Dolby Atmos pushes dynamics; vinyl revival |
